The BMW Z4 roadster is a two-seater that replaces the Z3. Its style has some traits of the prototypes BMW X-Coupe and BMW CS1.

The proportions of the body do not change much compared with the Z3. The BMW Z4 is a little more length, width and has something more than battle. A motor equality, not a heavier car, through the use of lightweight materials in its construction (aluminum and magnesium).

Initially, the BMW Z4 has a 2.5 liter engine with 192 hp or a 3.0 liter, 231 hp (the same engines that are used in the Series 3). The maximum speed is announced 235 and 250 mph respectively. Both versions carry a change of manual series, the BMW Z4 2.5i with five walks and the BMW Z4 3.0i with six speeds.

Alternatively, both versions can have two types of automatic gearbox with sequential command: a type of traditional torque converter and five walks (Steptronic) and another with the structure of a manual, clutch and automated controls on the steering wheel that has six-speed (SMG).

The rear suspension is similar to that of the 3 Series, albeit with minor modifications. The BMW Z4 is the first of series with a direction of electric assistance (EPS). Optionally, has an electronic system (called CDF) with which it is possible to vary the assistance of management, the engine response to throttle and, if you have automatic change, the program that it controls.

First impressions to hand wheel received has been very positive. The BMW Z4 has a stability much higher than Z3 and a more predictable reactions. In general I think a car much easier to drive and even more effective in all circumstances.

For qualities of the chassis (much more rigid than the Z3), I think it is at a level very close to the Porsche Boxter or the Honda S2000, two excellent references among cabriolets in its class.

The carrier is comfortable for both passengers and luggage compartment volume has won respect to Z3. While still small in general, have more capacity trunk that most of the roadster its size.

Those responsible for BMW do not provide a version 'M Roadster' of the BMW Z4, but say they are prepared for it, nor will a variant with bodywork as in the Z3 coupe it replaces. They also claim that has not been planned to mount any four-cylinder engine in the BMW Z4 (as it was the Z3).
